The noted collector John Quinn began acquiring Conrad manuscripts from the author in August 1911. The two carried on a correspondence, but never met (much to Quinn's disappointment). In Quinn's sale (Anderson Galleries, 1924) the Conrad manuscripts for which Quinn had paid some $10,000 fetched $110,000. With the Quinn bookplate (his sale, lot 1877). 'Twixt Land & Sea contains the first book appearance of "The Secret Sharer."
