London and Toronto: Dent; Paris: Dent [1918]. 8vo, presentation binding of dark red morocco single gilt borders, spine gilt-lettered in gilt-ruled compartments, red morocco spine label within one compartment reading "Presentation Copy" added later, g.e., red morocco gilt inner dentelles, by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, very slight wear at outer joints. Second English Edition and the first containing the seven-page "Author's Note." PRESENTATION COPY TO EDMUND GOSSE, inscribed by the author on a binder's flyleaf at front: "Edmund Gosse with great regard from Joseph Conrad. June. 1918." It was to the author and eminent critic Gosse that Conrad first sent the manuscript of Almayer's Folly (Gosse was then an editor at Heinemann). "They remained friendly in later years, and Gosse played a large role in Conrad's receiving a Civil List pension [in 1905] at a time when he desperately needed funds"--Karl, p. 331.
