[DRAKE, Sir FRANCIS]. BIGGES, WALTER, and MASTER CROFTES. Expeditio Francisci Draki Equitis Angli in Indias occidentales. Leiden: Fr. Raphelengius, 1588. 11 leaves, small 4to, nineteenth-century straight-grained red morocco, gilt lion device, motto "Diu delibera cito fac", on upper cover, spine gilt, g.e., a number of blank leaves bound in after the text, spine rubbed, joints and extremities rubbed, without the portrait, the 4 accompanying folding maps by Boazio, and the final blank leaf, upper margins restored, washed. FIRST LATIN EDITION OF THE FIRST ACCOUNT OF DRAKE'S 1585 EXPEDITION AGAINST SPAIN, the variant issue with type ornament vignette on title-page.
"This is an original account...of Drake's expedition from 1585 to 1586, during which he captured and plundered Cartagena and other towns, and burned forts San Antonio and St. Augustine. He then visited Roanoke Island, the site of Raleigh's Colony in Virginia, and carried the survivors back to England" (Church). It is "one of the earliest publications to mention Virginia" (H.P. Kraus, Sir Francis Drake, Amsterdam, 1970, no. 20). An edition in French appeared the same year, but the priority has not been established. The text is an abridged translation of the original English text, published in London a year later. Copies complete with the four engraved city plans by Baptista Boazio (see lot --) are very rare. Sabin 20828; Church 134 A; Adams D882; Alden 588/9.
