Small 8vo, red morocco gilt, spine in six compartments, g.e., by R. Petit, minute wear to extremities, the map with a few small expert restorations to 2 tears and at extreme edges. First French edition of part II of Drake's Voyages, second edition of part I, WITH THE RARE FOLDING ENGRAVED MAP SHOWING THE ROUTE OF DRAKE'S CIRCUMNAVIGATION OF THE GLOBE, sheet: 256 x 449mm. "The translation into French by F. de Louvencourt, Sieur de Vauchelles, of the narrative of Drake's voyage round the world, 1577-1580, as printed by Hakluyt in a supplement to his Principall Navigations, 1589. The work has been ascribed to one Francis Pretty, but...it was in fact compiled, probably by Hakluyt, from several briefer eyewitness accounts, one being Francis Fletcher's original narrative. It is not by Drake..."--H.P. Kraus, Sir Francis Drake (Amsterdam 1970), 44 (the 1641 edition); Brunet II, 831; Alden 627/20; JCB 2 (I): p. 208; Sabin 20845 (the JCB copy); Streeter sale I, 38 (the 1641 edition).

The map, entitled "The Herdike [ie., Heroique] Enterprinse Faict par le Signeur Draeck d'avoir cirquit toute la terre," was engraved by Nicola van Sype, probably in Antwerp, between 1581 and 1584. "ONE OF THE GREATEST CARTOGRAPHIC TREASURES OF THE ELIZABETHAN ERA" (Kraus, p. 102), it is probably the EARLIEST MAP SHOWING DRAKE'S ROUTE AROUND THE WORLD. "In spite of much research the precise date and origin of this interesting map...remain obscure. The map shows all the signs of a rushed production in the interests of topicality... the most likely date of preparation would be shortly after Drake's return in September 1580. Indeed the map has on it Carte veuee et corige par le dict siegneur drack although whether this is merely bombast or whether Drake actually saw and corrected the plate can only be conjectural... In his [Pilgrimes,] published in 1626, Purchas refers to a 'great map' hanging in James I's 'Gallerie at White Hall, neere the Privie Chamber.' Some of the inscriptions and ornaments on this map described by Purchas tally with those on the Van Sype map which it is supposed was copied from it. One possible explanation is that the 'great map' was a re-issue of the large map by Sebastian Cabot [Antwerp, 1544, cf. Shirley 81] and was immediately amended by hand with details of Drake's voyage on his return; the statement 'seen and corrected by...Drake' could therefore refer to the original and not specificallly to the Van Sype copy"--Shirley 149, citing 7 or 8 known copies of the map, most bound into copies of either of the 3 editions of this work. For an exhaustive discussion of the dating of the map and of the identity of the engraver, see Kraus, 48, and p. 102, ill.
