(11 x 7 in.), red morocco, covers with gilt dentelle borders, spines and turn-ins gilt, g.e., by Riviere, spines rubbed and faded, joints cracking, covers slightly rubbed, in vol. 1 small marginal repair to fol. A5, touching text but with no loss, large repair to fore-margin of Ee1 with loss to most of a side-note and 2 letters of text, smaller repairs to Ee2-5 affecting 3 letters of side-notes, side-notes of fols. Eee1-2 cropped, last leaf of vol. 2 with large repair to lower fore-margin affecting the last 2 or 3 words of 10 lines of the text on recto, tiny rust-hole to Gg3 in vol. 3, stain on Ggg3 obscuring 2 letters, small repaired wormholes to head-lines from Vvv6 to the end, increasing in size in the final quire with loss of up to 5 letters of headline and portions of border rules, fols. A6 of vol. 2 and Ll3 of vol. 3 slightly creased, lightly washed, title-pages soiled, occasional marginal finger-soiling, a few light marginal dampstains, some discoloration. Second edition, first issue, with the title-page dated 1598, and Church's first issue of the subsequently suppressed account of Drake's voyage to Cadiz on pp. 607-619 of vol. 1, mostly black letter, woodcut ornaments and initials.
