(11 1/16 x 7 1/4in.), early eighteenth-century calf, covers blind-panelled in the Cambridge style, the inner frame tooled in blind, spines gilt-panelled, remains of original black calf volume labels, later brown morocco title-label on vol. 2 (the others lacking, edges stained red, old restorations to heads and tails of spines, jointscracked, worn, rubbed, covers stained, hole to fol. Ii6 in vol. 1 with partial loss to 9 words, lower corner of fol. X3 in vol. 2 torn affecting catchword, headline rule of Ppp2 shaved, in vol. 3 paper flaw to Q2, margins of several leaves deliberately cut away, corner of Uu2 cut away affecting pagination and headline, upper margins cut close shaving border rules of approximately 25 leaves and cropping headlines of 8 or 9 leaves, stain to Qqq3 affecting a letter, dampstaining, especially to vols. 2 and 3, some browning, a few marginal tears. Second edition, cancel title-page omitting mention of Cadiz, Church's third issue of the suppressed account of Drake's voyage to Cadiz on pp. 607-619 of vol. 1 (printed c. 1720 according to STC), mostly black letter, woodcut ornaments and initials.
