[MARRYAT, Captain FREDERICK]. Peter Simple. London: Saunders and Otley 1834. 3 vols., 8vo, contemporary half calf and marbled boards, spine gilt-lettered and ruled, uncut, extremities slightly rubbed, title-leaf and inserted frontispiece in vol. 1 loose, brown half-morocco folding case, FIRST (ENGLISH) EDITION (the American edition preceded the English so far as vol. 1, and possibly vol. 2, are concerned), half-title in vol. 2 (all required), errata slip in vol. 3, 2 advertisement leaves at end of vol. 3 not preserved, inserted in vol. 1 are an engraved frontispiece portrait of Marryat and apparently proofs of 3 plates (heavily foxed) by R.W. Buss for the first illustrated edition of Peter Simple (London 1837); with a few ink corrections on pp. 89 and 377 (apparently not in Marryat's hand). Inscribed by Edward Duffield Ingraham -- see note to following lot -- on a front blank: "The engravings inserted are from drawings by Capt. Marryat, and are proofs sent on to him from England. 1838. The full length Portrait is American, & not the least like"; with numerous newspaper clippings relating to Marryat laid or pasted in vols. 1 & 2 by Ingraham (a few with his annotations) and with his ownership inscription (dated 7 January 1834) on a front blank.
Tipped in vol. 1 is an autograph letter signed ("F Marryat") to Edward Duffield Ingraham in Philadelphia, written from New York, 23 Sept. n.y., one page, 8vo, integral address leaf, margins wrikled, saying that he will be arriving in Philadelphia later than expected; with Marryat's calling card (oxidized) pasted to inside front cover.
