London: William Stanley for Henrie Featherstone 1625-26. 5 vols., folio, contemporary mottled calf, spines gilt, red morocco lettering-pieces, vols. 1, 4 and 5 with old paper shelf-mark label, corners rubbed, extremities of most spines chipped, old restorations to head and tail of spine of vol. 3, some cracking to joints, lacking blank leaves R4 in vol. 1 and A1 in vol. 5, fols. 5M4 and 7K4 in vol. 2 each with a 4-inch partly repaired tear affecting text, the second with loss to 6 letters, 8 letters on 5C3r and 4 letters on 6S2r obscured from adhesive stain, in vol. 3 rust hole to D6 with loss of 4 letters, staining to T3v-T4r, marginal tear to 3Z3, folding map of Greenland foxed, the folding map of Virginia in vol. 4 washed and linen-backed (possibly supplied from another copy), fol. 7R4 with 3-inch tear affecting text and side-note, first and last few leaves of vol. 5 foxed, fore-edge of the world map on E2r shaved, marginal wormhole grazing map border on I4r, tear to 2Y3 affecting side-note, a few short marginal tears or paper defects throughout, mostly marginal foxing, occasional marginal dampstaining, a few leaves discolored, some offsetting.
FIRST EDITION of vols. 1-4 with, as usual, the Fourth Edition of Purchas his Pilgrimage (second issue, with the dedication to King Charles I), first issue of vol. 1 with "Hondius his Map of of the Christian World" on p. 65 before cancellation and with the first state of pp. 703-706, Smith's map of Virginia in vol. 4 in its eighth state as described by Church, engraved title in vol. 1, dated 1625, incorporating 2 world maps and portrait of Purchas, printed titles, 7 double-page or folding engraved maps, 89 engraved maps and plates in the text, numerous woodcut text illustrations. 5 text engravings in vol. 2, on pp. 908, 909, 911, 1006 and 1026, were not printed in this copy, and cut-out copies of the engravings from another copy are tipped in over the appropriate blank spaces, possibly by the printer/publisher.
