Lot Essay

The composition of the above lot has traditionally been given to Gerard Terborch and was published by C. de Wit, Museum Bredius, Catalogus van de schilderijen en terkeningen, 1959, as an early work by the artist. S.J. Gudlaugsson (loc. cit.) rejects the attribution to Terborch. He dates the composition to circa 1680-90 and suggests attributions to Pieter Gerritsz. van Roestraten, Nicolaes van Haeften and Matthias Wulfraat. Gudlaugsson identifies several versions of this composition including a painting in the Bredius Museum, The Hague (inv. no. 118-19460). It is possible that the above lot may be identified with the version previously in the Anholt Collection listed under no. D 9 as no. 2 (cf. Gudlaugsson idem)
