Lot Essay

According to an old label formerly attached to the reverse of the original canvas the sitter is identified as 'Andreas Imhoff ii Duumvir'. Andreas Imhoff (1491-1579) was the most illustrious member of one of Nuremberg's oldest and wealthiest families. He served as a member of the city council from 1523 until his death and as its treasurer starting in 1544. For other likenesses of him see C.F. von Imhoff, Magnet Nuremberg, Connoisseur, Nov. 1978, pls. 8 & 10
