Lot Essay

Disdéri patented the carte-de-visite in Paris in 1854, a format that became exceedingly popular, especially among the socially prominent. His dramatic full-length views with overwrought accessories endeared him to the imperial courts of Europe to which he became the official photographer, to the nouveau-riche and to theatrical performers.
