Lot Essay

De La Rue, an inventor and chemist, was introduced to astronomy in the 1850s by James Nasmyth (The Moon: Considered as a Planet, A World, and a Satellite, London, 1874). He produced over 300 negatives of the moon and in 1862 was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society.
