Lot Essay

Hori was a close associate of the famous Yasuzo Nojima, director of the Nonomiya Photo Studio, who encouraged him to travel to Europe in 1929. Later, Hori becomes head technician and then in 1932 president of the Nonomiya Photo Studio. He was a member of the important avant-garde movement, Shinko Shashin [New Photography] which introduced the New Vision from abroad to Japan. Several of his photographs were included in the magazine Koga [Light Pictures], founded by Nojima, which became the major publication for the Shinko Shashin. He worked as a professional photographer in the Tokyo area, where in 1947 he opened his own studio. In 1969 he was named as president of the Japan Photographic Art Association.

Hori's work is included in the collection of the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography.

This is the only known vintage print of this image. In 1933 it was included in the important Japanese avant-garde journal Koga.
