Lot Essay

As one of the premier photographers of the pre-war era, Shibuya incorporated the avant-garde ideas of the Bauhaus and Constructivism in his professional work. He was known for both his straightforward approach as well as advertising photography using various photomontage techniques. His work was first exhibited in 1930. In 1936 he won first prize for his photograph Laito Cream in the Asahi Advertising Contest (see lot 80). He was widely exhibited throughout the 1930s-50s.

Shibuya's work is included in the collections of the Yokohama Museum of Art and the Kawasaki City Museum.

This print is from the artist's personal portfolio of spiral bound prints, which were his only works to survive the bombing of Tokyo.
