Château Latour--Vintage 1961
Details
Château Latour--Vintage 1961
Pauillac, 1er cru classé.
High-shoulder levels; labels with minor soil
"Not surprisingly, immensely deep, opaque-centred when young but, though still retaining considerable depth of colour, now less intense, with a lovely mature rim. Its nose dumb, rather severe in the late 1960s, has of course developed, but even after two decades appeared to be closed up and low-keyed, though it develops a gingery, cedary, fig-like fragrance with air. A huge, packed, fleshy, austere but magnificent wine, due to its high alcohol and tannins. Almost chewable. I have tasted more Latour than any other '61, some 30 or so notes, and believe that, like the '28, it will need a full half-century to come round." JMB
