Lot Essay

This late work may be dated to the early 1880s (ca.1883). It shows
Monticelli's typical, free, loose brushwork and rough paint surface
that attracted Cézanne to him at this very period when they painted
together near Aix. Van Gogh also collected this late style picture, six of which were in his and Theo's collection. The donkey, at the right, is a tour-de-force of Monticelli's creating a form from a few touches of color.
