Lot Essay
This painting dates from the middle period of Ribot's career (most
likely the mid to late 1870's) and is a striking example of his admiration for Rembrandt. Ribot's hommage to the great Dutch master is most evident in his manner of highlighting the face of the elderly
woman, while subtly revealing the inner character of his sitter. As a study of old age, and as a mood of contemplative introspection, the painting is quite moving.
This painting will appear in the catalogue raisonné on Ribot being prepared by G.P. Weisberg, and we are grateful to Dr. Weisberg for his assistance in preparing this catalogue entry.
