According to an inscription in the catalogue for the Beurnonville sale, this painting would have been dated 1835, however Rousseau's trip to Vendée took place in 1837. This painting is related to Rousseau's
Le Fouillis ou La Soupe aux herbes in the Cincinnati Museum of Art.

This painting will appear in the catalogue raisonné on Théodore
Rousseau being prepared by Pierre Miquel and Réné Huyghe of the
Académie Française, and we are grateful to them for their assistance in providing the documentation for this catalogue entry. This painting was examined by Michel Schulman in New York on August 15, 1991 and will be included in his forthcoming catalogue raisonné on Théodore Rousseau. We would also like to thank Mr. Schulman for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.
