The Bodegas Vega Sicilia was founded in 1864 and is
now the most revered of all estates in Spain. The wines reserved for
the 'Unico' bottlings are matured in wood for no less than ten
years. The resulting wine is powerful, eccentric, and very
long lived. Of the 1953 Michael Broadbent noted, "First tasted in
1979: amazingly powerful, impressive. At two recent tastings,
an extraordinary bouquet, at first singed, chocolaty, touch of
mint, opening up richly and after 90 minutes in the glass very
scented, roses, blackcurrants. Fig-like fruit on palate."
