1936 SEABIRD "TRIPLE COCKPIT" MOTOR LAUNCH SPEEDBOAT
Boat No. 3962
Honduras mahogany with red leather interior
Engine: six cylinder, Hercules MBL, 175hp, twin carburettor; Transmission: paragon reduction gear model RA15; Hull construction: Honduras mahogany, copper rivet construction, fiberglass leak proof bottom.
The Port Carling Boat Works, located in Port Carling, Ontario, was formed in 1925 by five former employees of the old W.J. Johnston Boat Company that closed in 1924. They built finely crafted runabouts and utility inboards from 1925 through the late 1950s. The company had a goal to build the finest inboard runabouts providing the owners with the ultimate boat availability. This new line of boats would soon be known as the famous Seabirds.
This particular Seabird is believed to be custom a one-off example. It is constructed out of the finest Honduras mahogany, and in the tradition of Canadian boat builders who were sensitive to weather conditions and hull strength, the entire hull is beautifully held together with copper rivets to a series of stringers, not only beautiful but extremely strong. The radical stern design distinguishes it from any other boat. In general, the latest design influences of the 1930s can be seen on this boat. The beautiful construction throughout, and use of twin V-slanted windshield, mirrors the designs of the great automotive coachbuilders of the day such as Dietrich and LeBaron. The V-slanted shields have an extreme rake, and the design of the mahogany planks and the caulking between them demonstrates the high quality craftsmanship. The dashboard and instrument layout is quite original which leads one to believe everything is custom built to order. This boat took two years to restore, from 1979 to 1980, and no expense was spared in its restoration. In 1981 at the prestigous Lake Tahoe Boat Show, the Seabird swept the show by winning Best of Show award, Peoples Choice, Most Elegant as well as winning First Place triple cockpit. The boat has only been in the water one summer since and has approximately thirty hours of use since then.
All the hardware and instruments are original. The special features on the boat include a wine cooler in the center compartment, the original cigar lighter in the rear passengers' compartment for celebratory occasions, and for safety purposes updated automatic fire extinguisher systems in the engine compartment. The boat also comes with a custom built double axle trailer to transport it. This rare Seabird Triple Cockpit Speedboat is completely operational, and is ready for show or use. The powerful engine is fully restored and will propel a number of family and friends in style. The Seabird will appeal to anyone who appreciates the finest in quality, design and condition.
