Château Margaux--Vintage 1961
Margaux, 1er cru classé.
Level of second magnum top-shoulder; both labels with stains
"Fragrance is its hallmark, scented even: violets, ripe mulberries, cedar. Originally fairly deep but by no means opaque, it now has a lovely soft, autumnal colour, mellow brick red with a warm amber rim; also, like Lafite, it needs time in the decanter and glass to open up. Its nose can be a bit dusty at first. On the last occasion (July, 1988), a delicious half-bottle, it had almost fraise des bois fruitiness of bouquet, blossoming gloriously, sweet, incredibly rich. Its initial youthful, tannic dryness had sweetened and softened, yet it kept a perfect grip on itself. Five stars. Lovely now. Decades of life ahead." JMB
