EDO/MEIJI PERIOD (SECOND HALF 19TH CENTURY)

Of rectangular form with rounded corners decorated in hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, kirigane and nashiji with a scene of a nightengale outside a pavilion with silver steps bordering a fenced garden with meandering stream, pine and plum, a reference to a scene from Genji monogatari, with gilt and silver applied blossoms and applied gilt bronze bird, the sides decorated with further scenes of the stream, hilly slopes and trees, all on a ground of nashiji, the interior also nashiji, silver rims- 10 1/4 x 8 x 6 1/4 in. (26 x 20.3 x 15.9 cm.)
