Worked in thirty-five blocks variously pieced and appliqued with flowers, lyres, hearts, floral wreaths, album books, stars, a chintz camel, birds, filigrees, and chintz figures, the whole enclosed in an appliqued border of meandering flowers and vines, variously quilted and self-bound in red cotton

Lot Essay

The central square of this quilt is cross-stitched, "Presented/to the/Rev. M.E. STOKES/by the ladies of/Ramipo[sic]/in the year 1852." Other names inscribed and cross-stitched on this quilt include "Maria Litehull, Frances W. Provost, Maria E. Brickell, Mary Gurnee, Elizabeth Secor, A. Washburn, Amelia A. Allison, H.A. Blauvelt, E. Johnson, Joannah Blauvelt, Elizabeth Onderdonk, H.M. Bulson, Rebecca Blauvelt, D. Lake, Sarah J. Haring, Phoebe McElroy, Margaret Gurnee, inscribed l.l. on square with central cross-stitched verse, Sarah Ann Cooper, C.A.O., Maria Lake, Elizabeth H. Anderson, Guilty Litchult, Elenor Bush, Pleiades/or Seven Stars/P.B. Sherwood/1852," Sarah Cooper, Gurnee, Amanda Furman, Mary Seally, Catherine Van Houten, Sophia Smith, Margaret Johnson [sic], Sarah Leonard, Catherine Cooper, E.E.
