This copy of an illustrated handscroll called the Haseo zoshi is dated 1827. According to the colophon it was copied by the painter Tsubaki Chinzan from a copy dated 1819. The original scroll dates from the early 14th century and is in the collection of the Eisei Bunko Museum, Tokyo, registered as an Important Cultural Property. It is a single scroll with five sections of text and painting illustrating a tale about the statesman and scholar Ki no Haseo (845-912). In this fantastic story a demon presents Haseo with a mysteriously beautiful woman who dissolves into water. For illustrations and discussion of the original see Murase, Emaki: Narrative Scrolls from Japan (The Asia Society, 1983, cat. 17; Nihon emakimono zenshu Vol. 18 (Kadokawa Shoten, 1968), pls. 51-58; Komatsu Shigemi, ed., Nihon emaki taisei, Vol. 11 (Chuo Koronsha, 1977).
