Tokyo National Museum, then Imperial Household Museum, probably 1936 as by Kano Shoei Naonobu (1519-1592). Two extant color postcards of the screens were produced by the Imperial Household Museum but no exact date of their publication is known

Lot Essay

Kano Shoei Naonobu is thought to be the third son of Kano Motonobu and was the father of Kano Eitoku. Under the patronage of the Ashikaga Shogun he lived and worked in Kyoto, collaborating with his son Eitoku on the Juko-in, Daitokuji, in 1562. He became head of the Kano school upon the death of his brother Munenobu in 1562 and was awarded the title of hogen. After entering the priesthood he used the go Shoei
