A RÉGENCE ORMOLU-MOUNTED KINGWOOD COMMODE
CIRCA 1720

In the manner of Ètienne Doirat, with serpentine moulded liver and grey mottled marble top above three short and two long crossbanded drawers veneered à quatre faces and mounted with foliate-cast pulls and pierced foliate lock plates, the sides similarly veneered, the angles fitted with chutes cast with plumed female terms continuing to short sabre legs fitted with pierced foliate sabots--32¾in. (83cm.) high, 57½in (146cm.) wide, 26¾in. (68cm.) deep

The angle mounts, overall form and kingwood parquetry are closely related to features of commodes made by the ébéniste Ètienne Doirat, recorded as working probably in Paris during the reign of Louis XV, and discussed in J.-P. Augarde, "Etienne Doirat, Menuisier en Eben", J. Paul Getty Museum Journal, vol.13, 1985, pp. 33-52, notably nos. 5 and 10.
