A FINE LOUIS XVI ORMOLU MOUNTED WHITE AND BLACK MARBLE ORGAN CLOCK SIGNED LEPINE A PARIS
In the form of a stepped portico, with shaped supports applied with leafy scrolls, fluted baluster columns supporting the moulded entablature, with leafy finials and urns of flowers flanking the circular clock case surmounted by putto writing and with laurel fronds enclosing jasperware medallion below, the moulded oblong base formed of fluted pilasters with ormolu leafy scrolls between, the central panel set with circular jasperware medallion, the white enamel dial with arabic chapters enclosing calendar ring, pierced gilt hands, blued steel calendar hand, the movement with anchor escapement, later spring suspension to sunburst pendulum, striking the hour by means of crossed out countwheel, the striking train also releasing the organ mechanism concealed within the base, playing a tune on 14 pipes and bellows driven by separately wound spring and wooden fusee, c. 1780--31½in. (80cm.) high

Lot Essay

Jean-Antoine Lepine (1720-1814), the eminent maker, sold continental clocks of good quality in addition to his more complicated productions. The present clock was probably supplied to Lepine by sources in the Valée de Joux in Switzerland who specialized in organ movements of this type.
