Lot Essay

A book of Reformed Catechisms by Carl Cist published in 1788 is in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art (Garvan, fig. 5, p.325), as well as two psalmbooks by Cist (Garvan , figs. 9 and 10, p.326), and a new testament (Garvan, fig. 12, p.327). Carl Cist was born in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1738 and arrived in Pennsylvania in 1769. Between 1775 and 1801, Cist worked as a printer in Philadelphia. For further information, see Garvan, p.355.
