This prestigious award is given annually by th Maxwell Club in Philidelphia to the N.F.L.'s top player. The award is named after Commissioner Bell who died while attending a Pittsburgh Steelers game in 1959. The Award, a large color photograph of Unitas, bears a plaque on the bottom of the frame that reads John Constantine Unitas - Winner of the Bert Bell Memorial Award as the outstanding professional football player in the United States for the 1959 season. Presented to the Baltimore Colts by the Robert W. Maxwell Memorial Football Club - Philidelphia, Pennsylvania. This award hung in the Baltimore Colts corporate office but was inadvertently left behind during their infamous nightime move of the team to Indianapolis--39½ x 29½ in.
