Gabriele Münter inscribed this painting on the reverse 'Kandinsky/Kallmünz'. She and Kandinsky were in Kallmünz during the summer of 1903. Roethel and Benjamin (op.cit.) illustrate a photograph which one of the artists took from the Castle Hill overlooking the town, a view which is closely related to that seen in the painting.
