In 1879, Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse designed the form for a vase Larue. The Sèvres Archive records the present example as one of two decorated by L. Gely and completed on 30 November 1881.

The cylindrical sides decorated with four shaped-oval panels depicting scenes from the fables of Lafontaine, including, a group of frogs frolicking in tall grasses, a fisherman mouse talking to an oyster with crabs suspended in a vine overhead, frogs scattering before a hare, two mice fighting over an egg with a swallow in a vine overhead, each panel flanked by musical trophies
