Worked in polychrome silk threads on a linen ground, the upper register depicting an alphabetic sequence, the lower register bearing the verse "Virtue is the cheifest [sic] beauty of the mind/The noblest ornament of human kind" and signed "Desire E. Demmen's Sampler Wrote by her in 1804" flanked by a pair of weeping willows and a pair of funereal plinths surmounted by urns with the initials "L.D." above a two-story Georgian house and a fence-enclosed garden surrounded by a continuous floral and sawtooth border--19 1/4in. high, 15 1/2in. wide
