Lot Essay

The 1870 U.S. Census for Potter County describes Scholl as a house carpenter. Born in Germany, Scholl emigrated to Pennsylvania with his wife in 1853. He began carving his sculptures in 1907 upon his retirement and created at least forty-five pieces. The snowflake stand and the sunburst celebration are examples of his more developed work and probably date towards the end of his career. For further information please see Katherine C. Grier, elebrations in Wood (Harrisburg, Pennslyvania, 1979).
