A PIECED AND APPLIQUED COTTON QUILT TOP
MARYLAND, CIRCA 1854
Worked in fifty-six blocks of chintz and calico on a white ground with red sashing and depicting various designs including broderie perse floral bouquets, a broderie perse Chinese flautist, a hanging lamp, an apple, stuffed grapes, and several geometric and foliate designs; many squares embellished with poetic verse and dates including 1849 and 1854 and signatures including members of the Chew family from Havre de Grace, Maryland, Van Pelt, Lawdon, and Smith--94 x 81in.
