Late 19th Century, In The Manner Of Manno Di Bastiano Sharri And Giovanni Bernardi
With a hinged broken arched pedimant centering a figure of a man seated on rockwork over a corinthian capitol and four seated cherubs flanked by hinged panels carved with mytholigical scences above a breakfront case inset with six oval tondos allegorical of the arts and sciences and divided by pilasters headed by female caryatids, on ten cabriole legs with paw feet and a double moulded rectangular plinth with bun feet, applied at the corners with male and female gods raised on sphinxes

The offered lot is an interpretation in woods of the Farnese casket made 1548 to 1561 and was made to hold rare manuscripts. (See Hayward, World Furniture, 1965, pl. 103)
