Lot Essay

Harvard's class of 1880 commissioned a class window from La Farge in 1880, but the window was not completed until 1883. This is a study for the left lancet of the two-lancet window; the right lancet represented the Greek poet, Homer. This drawing was published in 1883 in the Harvard University Class of 1880 Report of 1883.

This drawing will be included in the forthcoming publication by Yale University Press of the late Henry LaFarge's catalogue raisonne of the works of John LaFarge, completed by James L. Yarnell and May A. La Farge.
