A FOUR-TIER LACQUER INCENSE BOX (KOBAKO)

Of rounded rectangular shape, decorated in gold and silver hiramaki-e on a nashiji ground, the lid with a horse of inlaid silver trying to break free of an inlaid gilt-metal spider's web amidst scattered cherry blossoms, the sides of the box designed on each tier with different birds, leaves or flowers in gently flowing currents, the first tier (numbered from top) with cherry blossoms, the second with maple leaves, the third with blooming lotus, the bottom with Mandarin ducks, the interior nashiji, the rims pewter, the base of the bottom tier lined in gilt-copper
