A LADY'S PORTABLE ACCESSORY CASE (TABIKUSHIGE)

Composed of a deep rectangular accessory box with rounded corners fitted with a shallow cover, interior tray and paper compartment below, and a small, square writing box which pulls out from one short side above the base of the box, designed on the exterior with an overall pattern of phoenixes, paulownia scroll and the hollyhock crest of a branch of the Tokugawa family and the peony crest of the Konoe family in gold and silver hiramaki-e and gold foil on a dense nashiji ground; the writing box, tray and paper compartment also nashiji and the writing box fitted with a removable tray containing an inkstone, parcel gilt silver mizuire in silver saucer, and a paper pricker and paper knife with matching nashiji shafts; the pull of the writing box and side cord attachments silver engraved with hollyhock crests matching those on the exterior;
Inside the box in matching cases are a mirror stand (kyodai) and cosmetic box, the mirror stand hinged to facilitate storage flat inside the accessory box, and fitted with two support struts secured at the base by a silk cord, decorated in hiramaki-e with scrolling foliage on a nashiji ground, the hinges gilt-metal; the accompanying mirror of bronze cast on the back with auspicious animals and plants; the two-tier cosmetic box fitted in the top tier with a removable tray and decorated on the exterior with gold hollyhock crests and peony crests of the Konoe family with details of gold foil and with a silver and gold lacquer phoenix and paulownia scroll on a nashiji ground, the interior also nashiji
