AN INLAID-LACQUER WRITING BOX (SUZURIBAKO)

Of rectangular shape lacquered on the cover in gold hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, togidashi, mura-nashiji and kirigane with two folding fans laid at angles on a hirame and nashiji ground, the large open fan decorated with chrysanthemums, grasses, bellflowers and clouds, one bud and two bellflower blossoms inlaid in mother-of-pearl and five of the chrysanthemum blossoms inlaid in gilt-metal, the smaller, partly folded fan decorated with willows and plum blossoms, five also of gilt-metal, the pin on the fan stick also gilt-metal; the sides of the box hirame, the base roiro and nashiji; the interior of the box elaborately decorated in gold and silver lacquer with random kirigane and mother-of-pearl sea shells on a ground of roiro-nuri, gold hirame and nashiji, with swirling seaweed rendered in gold hiramaki-e and with water executed in togidashi; fitted with three brushes and one paper knife in matching lacquer cases, a mizuire of shakudo cast as a rock and an inkstone lacquered on the base and sides in further roiro, hirame and nashiji, rims silver
