A LACQUER DOCUMENT BOX (BUNKO)

Of square shape fitted with an overhanging cover cut in an arch above the two side cord attachments, lacquered on the exterior in two colors of gold in low relief with hollyhock crests (aoi-mon), sparrows and bamboo with slender stalks and pointed leaves, curved and overlapping, the ground nashiji and the curved edges of the box which border the square and rectangular panels of the sparrow and bamboo gold-ground with segments of the bamboo leaves extended from the panels, the interior and base of the box nashiji and the mounts silver cast in the form of hollyhock crests and fitted with cord rings

Lot Essay

A paper label affixed to the storage box states that this piece was in the collection of an Edo branch of the Tokugawa family.
