A LACQUER INCENSE BOX (KOBAKO)

Constructed in the form of a cage for quail in two circular tiers with an enclosing, circular cover, the lower tier supported by three tripod legs decorated in fundame and the sides of the compartment designed with a band of gold lacquer lozenges bordered by florets of black lacquer and gold in a background of aogai, the lower compartment also decorated with a band of butterfly and flower medallions on a checkerboard ground of the same width as three bands of floral and geometric patterns on the tier above, the cover lacquered in iro-e togidashi with quails on a background of roiro and hirame and applied with silver 'bars' of the bird cage above a red and gold ornamental band, the top of the cover lacquered in hiramaki-e with netting simulating that on the top of a real cage within a foliate scroll border, the interiors of the cover, compartments and base nashiji; fitted with a circular tray decorated in lustrous gold takamaki-e with millet within a gyobu border
