A LACQUER INCENSE CABINET (KODANSU)
meiji period (late 19th century)
Of rectangular form with hinged door opening to reveal three fitted drawers, decorated on the exterior in gold takamaki-e, gold and silver hiramaki-e, iro-e togidashi and inlaid mother-of pearl on a kinji ground with kimono airing by a stream, the richly decorated garments suspended from a rope running between blossoming cherry trees, the petals of which are of inlaid mother-of-pearl, the faces of each of the drawers designed in gold and silver takamaki-e and iro-e togidashi with autumn grasses, the interior of the door lacquered in gold hiramaki-e on a gyobu-nashiji ground with bush clover and a silver lacquer moon, and two insects of inlaid mother-of-pearl, the interiors of the drawers and the base of the cabinet nashiji, the handle, hinges and bud-form drawer pulls silver
