A LACQUER INCENSE CABINET (KODANSU)
meiji period (late 19th century)
The small, rectagular cabinet with hinged door opening to reveal three fitted drawers, decorated on the top and each of four sides with thatched cottages and the tiled roof of a temple, perhaps the Zaodo on Mount Yoshino, in hills along a river, all in gold takamaki-e, hiramaki-e, togidashii, nashiji and okibirame on a kinji ground, the landscape filled with pines and also blossoming cherry trees applied in thick silver foil, the inside of the door and the faces of the drawers decorated with a geometric pattern of gold and silver foil set against a roiro ground, interiors of the drawers and base of the cabinet nashiji, fitted with silver handle, hinges and drawer pulls incised with foliate scroll
