A LACQUER INCENSE CABINET (KODANSU)
meiji period (late 19th century)
Elaborately decorated with motifs illustrating chapter 23 "Hatsune" ("The First Warbler") from The Tale of Genji; on the two hinged doors the gilded-metal warbler is perched on the railing of Genji's Rokujo mansion shown on the left, the lake, flowering plum and camellias with blossoms of inlaid silver and gilt-metal are in the garden to the right surrounded by hillocks of gold takamaki-e and okibirame against a background of gyobu, each door is also inlaid in gilt-metal with the characters hatsu or ne; on the top of the cabinet are more sections of the villa and garden and on the sides and back another view of the garden in matching techniques on a gyobu ground; the interior is fitted with five large, rectangular drawers decorated on the faces, along with the inner sides of the doors, with a scene featured in a later chapter of the novel of the moonlit bridge spanning the Uji River in which there are baskets of stones, rendered in gold and silver lacquer, the moon of inlaid silver and the surrounding clouds gyobu, the interiors of the drawers and the cabinet nashiji and the drawer pulls, hinges and lock silver
