Illustrations
2233 illustrations as follows:
Text volumes: 1,510 (of 1,511) illustrations, comprising 1,504 (of 1,505) photogravures, 34 of them colored, the rest in sepia, 4 maps and 2 diagrams.
Portfolios: 723 photogravures in sepia: the plates numbered 1-722 with two plates numbered 400; plates 111-118 and plate 119 issued out of sequence with portfolios 4 and 3 respectively; plate 150 correctly numbered.
The Pierpont Morgan Library has subscription forms for 110 sets. Of these 46 have the photographs printed on Japanese Vellum, 43 on Van Gelder Hand Made, 10 on Japanese Tissue, 9 are mixed sets and 2 are unspecified. It is now supposed that only 272 of the proposed 500 sets were produced, of which as few as 25 copies have the photographs printed on Japanese Tissue, the most expensive state. Of the 212 subscribers' copies, mixed sets are not uncommon, particularly in the last 60 or so copies. The present set seems to have been made up by the publishers, as it has been in the possession of the University of Tennessee in its present form since at least 1930, the earlier volumes having possibly been acquired earlier.
Provenance: The University of Tennessee, Hoskins Library: owned by the library since approximately 1930 (the library's accession records do not begin until the early 1930's, and the circumstances of the set's acquisition have not been identified). (40)
