HOLINSHED, RAPHAEL. The Firste [Laste] volume of the Chronicles of Englande, Scotlande, and Irelande. London: for John Hunne [1577]. 2 vols. (vol. 1 in 3 parts), folio, 300 x 201mm. (11 13/16 x 7 7/8in.), seventeenth-century gilt-panelled calf, covers with central gilt oval lozenge, skilfully rebacked, board edges renewed, remains of ties, endpapers of vol. 2 renewed, fols. 2L4-5 and the last 3 leaves in vol. 1 as well as the folding plan of Edinburgh shorter and probably supplied, in vol. 1, repaired hole to 3I2 affecting 4 letters, 1-2 misbound after 2D4, in vol. 2, large marginal repairs to title, 2 leaves (Ggg4 and Ssss4) each with a skilfully repaired tear affecting 35 to 40 letters, hole to K4 with slight loss, the Edinburgh map with borders cropped and a 1/4-inch square hole to both leaves, a few side-notes in both vols. cropped, 6 leaves with marginal tears or repairs incurring minor loss to side-notes, a few short marginal tears, two just entering text, some mostly marginal dampstaining, a few small stains, marginal soiling and some frayed edges to vol. 2. FIRST EDITION, mostly black letter, double column, 4 title-pages within woodcut border (McKerrow & Ferguson 147a), printer's device (McKerrow 118), author's woodcut arms on versos of titles, numerous woodcuts in the text, many repeated, full-sheet woodcut view of Edinburgh in vol. 2, woodcut capital initials. In vol. 1, part 3, E6-8 are cancelled and F7 is a cancel, as in most copies; in vol. 2 L7, Oooo3 and Xxxx1 are uncancelled. STC 13568b; Grolier/Langland to Wither 146; Pforzheimer 494.
