A CARVED WOOD CABINET
meiji period (late 19th century)
The large, rectangular cabinet set on a wood plinth raised on four cabriole legs, fitted with two doors opening to reveal four interior shelves, and two lower drawers, the doors carved in high relief and colored in pigments of green, red, white and gold on a black lacquer ground with cranes wading in a lotus pond, the drawers similarly carved and colored with lotus scroll, the top and two sides designed in pigments of similar palette with scrolling red and silver lotus, the interiors of the doors illustrated with irises in silver, green and gold pigment, the interior and back of the cabinet black lacquer, the plinth of clear-lacquered wood decorated in pigments on the aprons of the front and two sides with scrolling lotus, the cabinet and plinth mounted with matching metal fittings incised with lotus scroll
