NORRIS, FRANK. A leaf from the original autograph manuscript of Norris' novel McTeaque: a Story of San Francisco (New York: Doubleday & McClure 1899). One page, folio, approximately 450 words written in ink with revisions on lined paper with large ruled margin at left, marked in one place in purple ink for galleys, tiny pin-hole at top affecting a letter, folded twice. This manuscript page corresponds to the last half of page 58, all of page 59, and the first half of page 60 in the published book. There are several holograph revisions by Norris and one variant reading ("blond colossus" in the manuscript becomes "clumsy giant" in the published book); in one place the protagonist's name appears as "MacTeague". Individual leaves from the McTeague manuscript were cut in half (into two pages) and tipped into the 245 sets of the Argonaut Manuscript Limited Edition of the author's Complete works (1928): complete separately available leaves such as this one are seldom encountered. Autograph material by Norris is rare.
