A LACQUER WRITING BOX (SUZURIBAKO) AND TRAY
edo period (19th century), signed hokkyo komin zo and sealed sensen [nakayama komin (1808-1870)]
The small and shallow writing box of square shape decorated on the lid in hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, okibirame, roiro, kimpun and e-nashiji on a kinji ground with a corner of an elegant villa overlooking an autumn garden of pines, maples and a flowing stream crossed by an arched bridge which is enclosed by a woven fence and clouds, the underside of the lid lacquered in low-relief gold with the characters of a poem reserved on a background of clouds in gold and black togidashi and nashiji, the lower interior of the box fitted with a removable tray containing a fan-shaped inkstone and silver mizuire cast as two joined maple leaves, the area under the tray roiro and nashiji, signed on the tray in the lower left in gold lacquer; together with a rectangular tray lacquered in roiro and nashiji with silver cord attachments and twisted, purple silk cord
