A PAIR OF LARGE EARTHENWARE JARS AND COVERS
meiji period (late 19th century)
Each oviform jar with upright neck fitted with a domed cover with knop finial, decorated in gilt and colored enamels on a cream crackled glaze ground with members of the legendary band of Chinese brigands from the novel Suikoden (Sheui-hu-chwan) engaged in combat or performing various infamous feats, the scenes set beneath a brocade collar interspersed with flowerhead medallions, and above a band of brocade lappets rising from above the ring foot, painted in turn with peony scroll, the neck encircled by a brocade design of fish, animals and clouds; each cover decorated with two opposing brocade-bordered reserves illustrated with quails and millet on one side and four flying cranes on the reverse, set on a brocade collar mirroring that of the jar; each finial divided into eight segments alternately decorated with brocade or inscribed with ten Chinese characters relating a passage from the novel
